When puffy circles or bags form under your eyes, it can lead to a number of issues with your appearance. For one, puffy or baggy lower eyelids will make you look tired, which has a negative impact on your appearance. In addition, bags under the eyes can make you look much older than you actually are, causing you to feel self-conscious.
In both of these cases, Dr. Kimberly Henry can perform lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to enhance overall facial appearance. She has performed a number of these procedures at her practice serving the San Francisco Bay Area, achieving excellent results that can improve how you look and the way you feel.
How Lower Eyelid Surgery Works
During lower eyelid surgery, a cosmetic surgeon uses careful facial liposuction and skilled revision of the underlying structures of the face in order to remove the puffiness and make you look your very best. The exact revisions required to enhance appearance vary from patient to patient, and these can be discussed during the consultation process.
The Benefits of Lower Eyelid Surgery
The benefits of lower eyelid surgery are as follows:
- Eliminates bagginess of the lower eyelids
- Patients look younger and more refreshed
- Improved confidence and self-esteem
- Scars are well-hidden and hard to detect
- Results look natural yet subtle
Ideal Candidates for Lower Eyelid Surgery
The best candidates for lower eyelid surgery are people who suffer from aesthetic flaws that affect the appearance of their lower eyelids. They should be in good health overall and not suffer from any kinds of systemic problems that would make the surgery a medical risk.
While scars are carefully hidden to be practically non-detectable, it’s important that patients have realistic expectations about the recovery process and what it entails. Knowing all of the risks and benefits associated with surgery will improve overall patient satisfaction and experience.
The Lower Eyelid Surgery Procedure
During lower eyelid surgery, patients are placed under general anesthetic in order to prevent undue discomfort and anxiety.
Your surgeon will make a small incision along the lower eyelid just beneath the eyelashes. It is through this incision that facial liposuction is performed to remove unwanted fat deposits. Additional revision of the underlying tissues is carried out through this incision. Excess skin is removed, and the lower eyelid skin is pulled slightly tighter to cause the disappearance of the bags.
Recovering from Lower Eyelid Surgery
Following lower eyelid surgery, patients can expect soreness, discomfort, swelling, and bruising, all of which are normal side effects and a sign that you are healing properly. Patients will also notice some itchiness and irritation of the lower eyelids, which can be addressed with medicated ointments.
For the first few days, patients should get a lot of rest and not engage in any strenuous physical activities. When outdoors, patients should wear sunglasses for a few weeks to protect the eye area from direct exposure to the sun. By the end of the first week, patients will have a follow-up visit with their surgeon to monitor healing progress.
Patients can generally expect a week off of work, though it can vary from patient to patient. Full post-op instructions for lower eyelid surgery will be provided during the consultation process.
