If you want to look your youngest, it’s important that you consider all of your options for advanced facial rejuvenation. Surgical procedures and non-surgical procedures can work wonders for you, and a skilled plastic surgeon can help you look your absolute best using either of these two methods for rejuvenation and enhancement.
Right now, we want to consider one aesthetic flaw that you may not have thought about: smoker’s lines. We’ll take a moment to go over their causes, the treatments that are available, and what you can do right now to prevent them from forming.
What are smoker’s lines?
Smoker’s lines are those unsightly vertical fine lines and wrinkles that form around the lips. These lines can form around the upper lips and lower lips.
What causes smoker’s lines?
While you may think that smoker’s lines are caused by smoking alone, that is not the case. It is true, though, that smoking does contribute to the formation of smoker’s lines.
Other causes of smoker’s lines include:
- Sun damage
- Poor hydration
- The natural aging process
Thankfully there are many non-surgical treatment to consider for smoker’s lines.
Dermal Filler Injections as a Smoker’s Lines Treatment
Dermal fillers are cosmetic injections that add volume to the injection site. Doing so helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles, leaving the skin looking youthful and smooth. With regard to dermal fillers, both Juvederm and Restylane injections are perfect for lines and wrinkles such as smoker’s lines, though there are a whole host of other options to consider that may be best for you and your needs.
BOTOX Injections as a Treatment for Smoker’s Lines
In addition to dermal fillers, it’s not uncommon for BOTOX injections to be used to address smoker’s lines. BOTOX cosmetic is not a dermal filler, however. (This is a common mistake/misconception.) BOTOX injections will freeze muscle contractions in the injection sites, which means that wrinkles in those areas fade or are less likely to remain.
Combining Dermal Fillers and BOTOX Injections
It is not uncommon for a facial plastic surgeon to consider combining dermal fillers with BOTOX injections as a means of treating smoker’s lines. Since the effects of both kinds of cosmetic injections are different, combinations of the two may maximize the results of care. Your candidacy for dermal fillers, BOTOX injections, and combined therapies can be discussed in greater detail during your visit.
What You Can Do to Prevent the Formation of Smoker’s Lines
If you want to prevent or minimize the appearance of smoker’s lines, be sure to:
- Do not start smoking
- Quit smoking if you smoke already
- Use a good sunscreen
- Stay well-hydrated
- Use a good moisturizer
