When we think of the signs of aging, we generally think of wrinkles or sagging skin around our face. One area of a woman’s body that may also show signs of aging are the breasts. As we age, our breasts can lose their youthful appearance and begin to sag due to a loss of skin elasticity. Women may also experience this as a result of pregnancy, weight loss, or genetics. Fortunately, women do not have to settle for the appearance of saggy breasts. Dr. Kimberly Henry, a leader in San Francisco plastic surgery, offers breast lift surgery to her patients wishing to restore the youthful appearance of their breasts.
Procedure
A breast lift surgery is used to remove excess skin and tissue in order to “lift” the breast. Dr. Henry can discuss your incision options, but in general, an incision is made around the nipple and a vertical incision that extends down to the crease of the breast. Through these incisions, excess skin and tissue can be removed. After the excess skin and tissue has been removed, the nipple-areolar complex is usually placed in a higher position on the breast. In some instances, Dr. Henry may recommend to her patients in San Francisco breast augmentation to be performed along with the breast lift to give the breasts a fuller appearance. This will depend on each individual case and should be discussed with Dr. Henry. If you are considering breast lift surgery, keep in mind the following:
- The procedure usually takes two to four hours
- The breast lift is performed with the use of sedation or local anesthesia
- A breast lift is an outpatient procedure
Recovery
After the procedure, Dr. Henry will send her patients home in a bra with light dressings over the incision. This bra should be worn for two to three weeks, at which time the sutures will be removed. Following the procedure it is important to limit your activity. The most common side effects of breast lift surgery are bruising, swelling, and discomfort. Pain can be managed through the use of oral pain medication. In general you can expect to be fully recovered within four to six weeks after surgery.
Complications
It is uncommon to experience complications after a breast lift surgery. In rare cases, bleeding, infection, or loss of sensation in the nipple area can occur. If you suffer from any complications, you should see your surgeon. In some cases patients may have unusual scarring or notice a slight difference between the two breasts. If this is the case, touch up procedures can be performed to address these issues.
