Chin Augmentation

Model looking off to the rightIf you are unhappy with the appearance of a weak, undefined chin, you may be considering chin augmentation surgery. Chin augmentation surgery can help enhance definition and balance within the face, improving overall appearance and confidence. As with any surgery, chin augmentation requires some time for recovery. During patient consultations, Dr. Kimberly Henry explains what to expect during chin augmentation recovery. The Chin Augmentation Procedure

The chin augmentation procedure can help create balance among the facial features, enhancing your overall appearance and helping to boost your self-esteem. Chin augmentation surgery is a relatively simple procedure, taking about 45 minutes to just over an hour to complete.

During chin augmentation surgery, a small incision is created under the chin or inside the mouth, between the gum and lower lip. A GORE-TEX® or silicone implant is then inserted through the incision and adjusted to the desired position in front of the jawbone. Once the optimal position is found, the incisions will be sutured closed and recovery can begin.

Recovery after Chin Augmentation

Immediately after chin augmentation surgery, it’s normal for patients to experience some pain and swelling. Some bruising may also occur. Pain or discomfort can be managed with a prescribed pain medication or physician approved over-the-counter pain medicine. Pain, bruising, and swelling should decrease as the body heals. However, bruising and swelling may persist for six weeks after surgery.

Patients should stick to light activity for the first few days following surgery. A special garment is generally worn during this time to keep the chin tissues in place as they heal and to reduce swelling. Swelling may further be reduced by keeping the head elevated.

Sutures will remain in place for about 10 days after surgery. Generally, sutures placed within the mouth will dissolve on their own. Sutures placed beneath the chin will need to be removed by your surgeon. Many patients are recovered enough to return to work within two or three days after surgery. Although patients may feel well enough to return to work within a few days, they may prefer to stay home until sutures are removed or dissolve on their own.

Candidates for Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation can help enhance the appearance, adding definition and improving the shape of the chin. Both men and women who are unhappy with the appearance of their chin may benefit from chin augmentation surgery. Ideal candidates for chin augmentation should be in good general health, free of cardiac problems or uncontrolled diabetes, and experience one or more of the following aesthetic issues:

  • Recessed chin
  • Weak jaw line
  • Pointed or overly square chin
