The skin is the most delicate and vulnerable of all human organs. As it becomes damaged due to exposure to the elements and the natural aging process, people can begin to look older and even unhealthier than they actually are. Fortunately, cosmetic medicine offers a number of outstanding solutions to this problem, including many that are non-surgical. One of the most effective and time-tested of these solutions is dermabrasion, also known as facial sanding.
Dr. Kimberly Henry is pleased to offer dermabrasion to patients who want to rejuvenate their facial skin without undergoing a more invasive plastic surgery procedure. She explains every aspect of the procedure, including dermabrasion benefits, during consultations at her San Francisco, CA plastic surgery practice. If you are interested in regaining the smooth, healthy, radiant skin you had in your youth, we invite you to meet with Dr. Henry at your earliest convenience.
What Is Dermabrasion?
Dermabrasion is a procedure in which a small, handheld tool with a rotating burr on one end is used to remove the uppermost layers of the skin. These layers are the ones that display the most obvious damage, including acne and other scars, as well as wrinkles and textural inconsistencies. The removal of these layers will uncover the healthier skin lying underneath. While this layer will be red and raw at first, as it heals, it will become smooth, vibrant, and radiant in its appearance. The healing process usually takes about a week, and the redness subsides over the course of about two to three months.
The procedure is generally performed on an outpatient basis while the patient is under local sedation or general anesthesia. Although the patient may experience some soreness after the procedure, this can usually be managed with medication.
What are the benefits of dermabrasion?
Dermabrasion offers a multitude of benefits, especially when it is performed by a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon such as Dr. Henry. For example, dermabrasion is:
- Non-surgical: For patients who wish to rejuvenate their skin without having to undergo facelift surgery, dermabrasion can effectively soften superficial wrinkles and fine lines. While it will not produce results as dramatic as surgery, dermabrasion can help to delay the need for surgical procedures.
- Quick: Dermabrasion can be performed in as little as a half hour or so. It is a popular lunchtime procedure.
- Highly customizable: It can be performed on isolated areas of the face or on the entire face, as the patient’s needs and goals dictate.
- Good for the health of the skin: By ridding the face of dead and damaged skin, dermabrasion stimulates collagen production and improves the texture, color, tone, and overall health of the facial skin. It can also help to improve circulation and treat enlarged or clogged pores, dull or oily skin, and uneven pigmentation.
