Scar Repair Procedure

Scar repair and revision are usually performed under local anesthesia. If the scars are large or if the patient prefers, the procedure may be done under sedation and local or general anesthesia. The procedure generally involves surgically removing the old scar and then repairing the revised area with one of several techniques including dermal injections, dermabrasion and laser skin resurfacing.

Scar repair and revision are almost always performed on an outpatient basis. Postoperative pain is usually minimal. Depending on the location, sutures are removed within 4-10 days, and discoloring fades within 6-24 months.

Additional plastic surgery procedures that may enhance scar repair results are Z-plasty (a surgical method of releasing tight or contracted scars), dermabrasion, and laser skin resurfacing.
